Book Description

Breathing for Singing is the first book in The Acoustic Singer Series, a natural approach to folk singing. The author is Cary Fridley, Appalachian folk singer and roots musician from Asheville, NC. Fridley is also is a music teacher with a Masters in Music Education from UNC-Greensboro. She draws from her roots in rural Appalachia and her knowledge of classical singing technique. Breathing For Singing gives detailed descriptions anyone can understand about how professional singers train their bodies for singing, while relating these ideas to the natural technique of traditional ballad singers, old-time and bluegrass singing styles, and Native American singers. There is an emphasis on focus and relaxation, body awareness, and using the diaphragm. The illustrations are simple and to the point, with exercises to aid in practice. Breathing For Singing contains a wealth of information for any style of singer, and is a valuable addition to any digital library.
